Note: In the state of Illinois, the prevention of cruelty to animals is entrusted to private societies, but Illinois was the first society organized in the state. The Illinois Humane Society, was incorporated by a special act (Public Laws of Illinois, 1869 and Illinois Statute Annotated, Chapter 32, Sections 29-34). At the time, there were 101 counties in the state and most of which are separate branches of the Illinois Humane Society of Chicago. Illinois is the only state that is centralized in the City of Chicago
